It's a choice

As The Wege points out, today is "Blog for Choice Day". It's a way of encouraging bloggers (I prefer the term of online opinionator) to describe why they are pro-choice.

Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007

Woman's bodies in this country are their own. They can do with them whatever they want. If they want to pierce their nipples and get a tattoo of a dragon belching forth a flaming portrait of Donna Summer, it's their choice.

As for being pro-choice, it, in theory, goes entirely against my Catholic upbringing and against the views of my wife as well. We have mentioned our views but we know each other enough that no matter what either one of us says, the other surely won't change their opinion on the matter.

Women, though, have the option of abortion. Having that option, and with most humans being moral deep down inside, most women would have at least some morality issues with an abortion no matter how far along in the pregnancy they were. Now if they can justify it, so be it but I like to think of abortion as being at least a more viable option in the case of rape, incest, health of the mother and health of the fetus.

In no way, as some would like to portray, does having the option of abortion on the table promote promiscuity. If you were to take away the option of abortion, women in desperate need (being out of options) would resort to risky procedures and run the risk of losing their own life.

Women of the U.S.A., do as you wish. Do to your bodies as you please. They are, after all, yours and not mine. Don't let anyone else tell you what can and can't be done either.

I am definitely NOT a supporter of abortion! I think it is morally wrong. Yet, I do not think it is my place to force my choice on any other woman. I am not pro-abortion, but I am pro-choice. What another woman chooses to do with her body, is not for me to say. Also, having known some women who have made that difficult choice, it is not one that is easily made or easily dealt with afterwards.

Good to hear men speaking out.

I was reading a blog today that said, "The time has come to push past the word “choice” and start talking about rights and justice. Women have a right to self-determination and bodily integrity."

I for one...after my rape...I was very grateful for Plan B. Pro- rights is right. I already had someone take my body and do with it as they wanted...at least I had the choice... or the right ...not to carry his baby.

Thanks for calling my attention to this, Brian. I've joined in on the BFCDay.
