Music is so powerful. It's the audio equivalent of a photograph. Music oftentimes can jog your memory back to a particular time in your life; reliving an event because that particular song reminds you of a certain period in your life. I, for one, get all reminiscent when I hear an old Oasis tune off "What's The Story Morning Glory?". Take "Wonderwall" for example. I was in high school, more specifically it was my Junior year and us guys, as weird as it seems, had the prom on our minds. My two closest friends, we always ate lunch together, would regularly spin that CD during lunch or catch "Wonderwall" on the radio during our alloted time of feasting.

I still hear that song from time to time and it brings me back to those March, April and May days of 1996. Thinking about attending prom, looking forward to the after-party, just living life as we knew it. Times have changed since then, that collective of friends including my prom date from that year, live as much as 2,000 miles apart. We still remain in touch as we go on with our adult lives and honest-to-God careers but we are still the same people, we just found ourselves and realized, too, that we found each other for a reason and I realized that music is not just great to listen to, it can build lifelong bonds as well.

Locally in the greater Twin Cities, 89.3 (KCMP) The Current has launched their own weekly musical guru-type program. It airs at the unGodly late (for some of us) hour of 11 PM but is available weekly in podcast format for your downloading pleasure so you can listen at your convenience.

On a recent show (which was actually a repeat from late 2006) Bill DeVille talks with is guests about the dying format of the album and the place where it was purchased, the "Record Store".

A timely topic even if it has aged for a good six months.

FREE TUNE!
Before I delve into the tune, take a glance at the top of this post and stare intently at the new banner. I'm thinking of changing it monthly as I explore new designs which catch my eye. Should I, shouldn't I? Drop me a line and help me decide...

Being nostalgic earlier on, I'm taking a retro approach this week. Venerable punk outfit "The Buzzcocks" (an English name if ever there was one) have the typical early punk sound which led the way for today's emo-punk style adopted by such showy bands My Chemical Romance, AFI and Panic! At The Disco. Sure, The Buzzcocks and bands of their time weren't much for huge theatrical productions and they missed the MTV era by a few years but punk is punk.

In decided un-punk fashion, here is the rather upbeat and poppy "Everybody's Happy Nowadays".

I'll be spending at least part of the weekend holed up in the house as the temperature is expected to plummet to 15 degrees below zero at least one night. Enjoy the tune and go out and buy a disc at your local record store and, no, Target isn't a record store.

I love listening to my old fav's from highschool. It makes me feel like I am still that teenager full of wonder, ambition and invincibility.

Ironically I lived in Minneapolis at the time. Where did you go to highschool?

I went to school in outstate Minnesota, Austin to be specific and despite the city's reputation it treated me just fine throughout my school years.

I love music and you are so right, it is like a photograph. I can't hear Rapper's Delight without thinking I am back in 10th grade, dancing at the Red Caboose, or hear anything by the Beach Boys and not think of summer.

I completely understand - certain CDs of mine remind me of different travels. The Rasmus - watching the sunset over the Mediterranean from the train to Rome, Switchfoot - a car trip through beautiful Minnesota fall.

I have really made an effort to keep up with the changes in music, but everyones' comfort zone is the music being played when they were between 14-24. In Western Michigan, we have a listener-sponsored radio station that plays the most eclectic mix you could imagine. You will not like all of it, but you will hear songs not played on any other radio station around! You can get it on the Internet, I'm told.WYCE-and I am a Day sponsor once every year(you buy it during the fund drive).
