Is New York Post cartoon racist?

Is this New York Post cartoon racist? Does it depict the police officers shooting Barack Obama? After all, there are still far too many backwoods Americans who throw about derogatory slang terms about blacks.

However, it's free speech but does free speech also cover what some define as hate speech? The line, though, was crossed a few years back with a Muhammed editorial cartoon published in Europe and that led to riots. America is much calmer than that but does this editorial cartoon prove that racism is again going mainstream?

Like any art form, it is open to interpretation and I welcome and am curious about yours.

MinnPics is far less controversial than a racist New York Post cartoon so check out the great photos from around Minnesota!

I guess it could mean that whoever wrote the bill must have been as crazy as a crazy chimp. But still... there's the racist stereotype, and then there's the implication that we can save the country by shooting the author of the bill (or more specifically, Obama).

Republicans and their fans are becoming comically irrelevant with stuff like that.

I don't see any purpose in that cartoon at all. Just like our society to attempt to laugh at violence, yet if we see a shirtless woman on TV you get all the groups out there getting bent out of shape.

This just bothers me. I don't like it at all and I think you made a really good point by posting it.

I read the cartoon this morning, didn't think much of it but was surprised it is making a stir. I honestly didn't connect it to racism. People are way to serious.

This kind of stuff makes me both sad and angry! It is in your face RACISM. STOP NY POST NOW!!!

There are two problems with this. 1) Black people have had a history of being likened to beast especially monkeys. Actually that was part of the justification for slavery. 2) Bush messed up a lot, but no one would dare to suggest to shoot him... for anything! How is President Obama different 3) Given the recent situations with the police murdering a handcuffed black man in Oakland, CA, execution style and last year;s fifty shot murder of a unarmed black male (Sean Bell). This image carelessly portray the endorsement of police brutality.

Just because it does not offend you, doesn't make it non-offensive. It is very much so. Just when I though America had grown.

I don't know... The racism angle is a bit of a stretch. Obama didn't even write the bill in the first place, so I mean, I'm not really following here. The Dems who wrote the bill are like rampaging chimps?

Maybe the true moral of this cartoon is that cops are dumb.

Interesting angle to this story I saw on cable news last night...

Racist or not, the controversy has made this cartoon nearly ubiquitous in the media...cable news, the internet, blogs, etc.

As with the Muhammed cartoon a few years back, the discussion is just ensuring that it's getting way more exposure than it would have gotten if it had just been ignored.

You know the guy who drew it is just loving it. "I've always wanted to be syndicated," he's thinking. He's probably getting calls from right-wing magazines, too, asking him, "Do you freelance?" Dude just hit the big time.

Actually the chimp reminds me of Bush and that's when talk of a stimulus bill plus its early starts began...
