“I’m torn, Danny.”’ Miranda said with a small bit of omelet in her mouth. “On one hand I’m obviously torn up about Becky’s murder and just feel like I could cry at a moment’s notice and feel like I could be next. On the other hand I want to go all Dexter on this mother-fucker and stalk him, take him and turn him into chum.”
Danny leaned back, “Wow, I knew you were pissed off about Becky’s murder but hopefully you don’t have the instinct of a vengeful murderer somewhere deep inside you.”
“I” Miranda paused, “I don’t know, Danny. If I found out who this was I would have no problem pulling the trigger in any situation.”
Danny sat, slowly chewing his mountain of breakfast food, absorbing what Miranda had just said.
“Maybe,” Danny said cautiously, “you should take the rest of the day off.”
“Yeah,” Miranda agreed, “I might be able to at least catch a nap or find something to take care of to distract me from this shit. I haven’t been to my apartment in a few days, I could catch up on laundry, I suppose.”
“Hey, I’ll cover for you no matter what it is you choose to do but definitely get some rest. We both only got about 5 hours of sleep last night and I know how taxing this is on you.”
“Sounds good,” Miranda paused to yawn, “I could use a bit of a break to catch up.”
“Then it’s settled. We’ll finish up here and I’ll drop you off at your place.”
The pair quickly ate the remainder of their breakfasts, paid the bill and made their way to Danny’s Durango.
As they headed back across town to Miranda’s apartment, Miranda turned to look behind the vehicle.
“Um, Danny. I’ve been watching that car behind us and I think we’re being followed.”
“Are you sure?” Danny asked as he began scanning his side-view and rear-view mirrors.
“Yeah,” Miranda said as she slumped down a bit, “and that same car was in the restaurant parking lot. It’s just a coincidence, right?”
“At this point I have no idea.”
