A murder story - part twenty-six

“This is different Danny. Becky was my rock when my parents got divorced. She got me through the worst part of my life I had ever experienced. We went to prom together rather than find dates. We even got a place together after our first year of college. We were inseparable. Vacations, holidays, everything. Now she’s gone and the person who did this is going to fucking pay.”

Miranda punched the dashboard hard, shaking her fist in pain afterward.

“I could lie and say I totally understand,” Danny offered up, “but this has to be unimaginably tough for you to go through but just remember that I’m here for you. Remember, too, that the police will catch who ever it is that committed these murders. I’d personally love for it to be us who locks this shit bag up but beggars can’t be choosers.”

Miranda turned towards Danny, a slow flow of tears cascaded down her face.

“I’d like nothing more than to be the officer who cuffed this fuckhead and rubbed his face in the dirt while I read him his rights. This one is sorta personal to me, Danny.”

“I can totally get that but just remember that we work with the law and we do things by the book.”

Danny turned the steering wheel of the Durango and the vehicle bounced into the parking lot of The Evergreen Diner.

“Here,” Danny handed Miranda a couple tissues from the vehicle’s center console, “I think we’ll both have clearer heads once we get ourselves some food.”

“Agreed.” Miranda said as she wiped the tears from her face and composed herself. “Even though I don’t have much of an appetite, getting away from that scene for a while should do me some good.”

Danny and Miranda hopped out of the black Durango and walked towards the front door of the small diner. A bell above the door rang as Danny opened the door for Miranda and the two walked in, greeted by a cheerful lady.

“Just the two of you today?”

“Yep, and a booth if it’s not too much trouble.” Danny said as he looked down at his phone, scrolling through text messages.

“Can I get you folks anything to drink?” The cheerful lady asked as she handed Danny and Miranda menus.

“A pot of coffee for me.” Danny replied, his eyes still glued to his phone.

“And for you, miss?”

“Coffee for me, too, thanks.”
