As Miranda looked over the menu, she began talking. “So, how do I deal with this? How do I keep working this case when all I want to do is find the son of a bitch who murdered Becky and rip the fucker’s throat out?”
“Well,” Danny sat his phone down on the table, “the only thing you can do is pour those feelings into solving this case. As tempting as it is to simply rip someone’s throat out, it’s not really how us civilized police work.”
“I know Danny,” Miranda said as she looked out the restaurant’s window, “but this feels so damn personal to me after this morning. I mean, nobody ever thinks they’ll get a call at four in the morning only to find out that the call they’re going on is their best friend’s murder.”
“Hey, I bet you’re not the only officer in America to roll up on the murder of someone they knew and loved.”
“But it’s the evidence we found. I just feel like this person knows me. I don’t think you’ve ever worked a homicide case where you felt that the killer personally knew you.”
“Well,” Danny said as he exhaled deeply, “you’ve sorta got me there. But we don’t want to get the cart ahead of the horse, so to speak. Yeah, we found some evidence that seems like it’s someone who is at least familiar with you but to think that someone is out there killing people, getting closer and closer to you, is a bit of a stretch.”
“Are you just saying that to calm me down Danny?”
“No way Miranda, you know that I’m no bullshitter and I’m not one to just believe things based on a few details which more than likely are just a coincidence.”
“What will you two be having this morning?” A grey-haired waitress asked as she sat down silverware wrapped in a napkin for the officers.
Danny tapped his right index finger on the table. “I’ll take the tall stack flapjack special with scrambled eggs and bacon.”
“And for you miss?”
“Uh, I’ll have the egg white omelet and a side of wheat toast.”
