Third time's a charm, right? Well maybe not in the U.S Mint's third attempt to roll out a dollar coin that people will actually use. If you have been around as long as I have you have heard rumors of something called the Susan B. Anthony dollar which, according to my parents, was silver colored and the size of a quarter. That led to confusion and the bulk of the coins ended up in the hands of collectors, not exactly the wide circulation our government had hoped for.
The second attempt was a spiffy gold colored dollar coin with the image of Sacajawea on it. Again, the Mint decided to make it approximately the same shape as the quarter but gold. This move would definitely help the blind and make the coin easy to use in vending machines. Again, after a few weeks, its novelty wore off and it wound up as a collectible.
Tomorrow marks the most unpublicized release yet. The third attempt at a dollar coin goes public Thursday and is again gold in color and likely doomed to fail. Honestly, would you rather carry a pocket full of dollar bills or strap on some industrial strength suspenders and load your pockets up with the same dollar value in shiny new gold dollar coins? Paper wins in my eyes.

How is the toothfairy supposed to carry a heavy coin?
Another waste of tax dollars....look at the bright side, it creates dollars to use for tax anyway.
What goes around comes around.
Funny the uninformed comment Slick made about a waste of tax dollars, when it would actually save the US Mint tens of millions of dollars every year in printing costs if they abolish the dollar bill.
I will use the new coins. Much more convenient than a see-thru worn out dollar bill making my wallet so fat I can't even sit straight.
I just wish the US Mint would be smart enough to abolish the dollar bill completely. Do away with the useless penny too (which costs more than one cent to make).
I love the blog that you have. I was wondering if you would link my blog to yours and in return I would do the same for your blog. If you want to, my site name is American Legends and the URL is:
www.americanlegends.blogspot.com
If you want to do this just go to my blog and in one of the comments just write your blog name and the URL and I will add it to my site.
Thanks,
David
i'm sorry, but I think this is just stupid. who needs another coin? And if you're going to make another $1 coin, at least make it much bigger than a quarter so you don't get them mixed up!
They should do what we did here in Canada. Just distribute the dang thing and do away with the dollar bill. It's that easy. It was weird at first but we got used to it and have moved on to complain about other things.
In USA we tried 2 one dollar coins and a two dollar bill-all failed. Why did they fail? Because they should have eliminated the one dollar bill, come out with a one dollar coin, and the two dollar bill all at once-pretty much like Canada did.
