We all know that traditional media (radio, TV, newspapers, magazines) are facing tough times. Whether it's due to overpaying for properties, unrealistic profit projections, living in the past or cutting staff to remain profitable, these are the toughest of times for traditional media outlets.
Just this morning, KFAN radio's (KFXN-FM, 100.3) Mike Morris "The Superstar" was "let go" from his job as host of the stations Power Trip morning show. That leaves the show in the hands, for the time being, of the sidekicks/co-hosts of Chris Hawkey, Sludge (Cory Cove) and Paul Lambert, aka Meatsauce. While I rarely listened, I do know that Mike Morris was the host for a reason. While the show came off as juvenile at best, they covered sports and topics related to their core audience of 18-49 year-old men. Morris was the adult of the team, if nothing else, by age.
The same thing happened last week to the Half-Assed Morning Show on rocker 93X. Longtime host Weasel was let go (again, due to cost-cutting measures) after helming the morning show on KXXR-FM 93.7 for well over a decade. That move leaves the overly juvenile Nick in charge with the other sidekick Josh playing second fiddle along with a new guy, Ben. It's a rudderless ship. While Weasel's input had diminished in the last 18 months of his time on the show, he still provided direction, reigned in the kids and was at least an experienced DJ.
How far, though, can the cost-cutting go? Will listeners still tune in for what is obviously a lesser-quality product? It's a vicious cycle. When you cut the costs of an experienced staffer (regardless of the medium), that experienced voice/talent, if replaced, is replaced by someone less-experienced who is less likely to produce a high-quality product. In turn, listeners/readers (depending on the medium) look elsewhere -- many never return. In happens in radio and it happens in print media and it happens on TV. When those talented faces of their respected medium leave or are cut, advertisers may also leave -- unhappy to have their business appear within/alongside an inferior product.
It never ends. Remember when Tony Fly was relevant and maybe even a recognizable name? Up until a few months ago, he was actually still on the air -- right here in the Twin Cities. Saddled with moronic programming choices, 96.3 KTWN-FM was quite obviously a piss-poor fit for Tony Fly and management saw the opportunity to axe a talented host to save money while retaining an inferior on-air product.
With the combination of the recognizable faces of media organizations leaving for more stable pastures or being unceremoniously axed to cut costs and talented behind-the-scenes staff leaving in droves for alternative, stable careers; traditional media as we know it is becoming a shell of its former self. What they fail to remember is that the most talented individuals are often the highest paid (rightfully so) and when they leave, they leave with the talent and skills which could make the company viable in some form in the future. It's like looking at someone whose dark fate has already been decided.

93 x is a joke they don't play any new music during the course of the day it's the same sins I've been hearing since 1999 there has to be some new music they can play to try.to bring in a younger demographic
Actually, like the HAMS now that Weasel is gone, tired of the stuff they were saying and that they are playing music instead of talking sports half the dang morning. I do however wish 93x would go back to playing the music that was being first played when they started. I am a 47 year old female.
Shut the hell up
The morning show on kfan is WAY better since Mike Morris was let go. He dominated the conversation while he was there. Letting him go was a great move, and has not had a negative impact at all. C-Hawk, Sludge and Meatsauce are hilarious.
I think the HAMS is much better without weasel. He was a typical whiny PC leftist. Much of us in the 18-49 demo are tired of hearing that crap. TELL IT LIKE IT IS, cowards...
Ben sucked! Hope Ali is in she adds way more.
Ali sucks too, all she does is giggle and go along with what the boys. She contributes very little on her own
are you for real?
I loved Weasle. Now 93x is the stupid KQ morning show wanna-be's. Although Ali is infinitely smarter than idiot Teri Traen.
The banter between Nick, Josh and Weasle was hilarious and I'd much rather listen to that than another stupid AC/DC song. Oh and as far as Weasle being a leftist, it's much better than being a Tea-tard like Barnyard.
I know it’s been a year (to the day… wow) that this was posted but I feel that actually gives me some perspective on the situation (certainly more perspective than the original poster). I like the HAMS much much more with Josh and Nick only (I don’t count Ali yet, she contributes very little, but I assume she will get her talk-show legs under her in the next few months). To be honest the only thing I think when I read through your comments about how Nick is “overly juvenile” is that you must be 40 or older... maybe much older… and that you just don’t get the fact that Nick is a character, much like Andrew Dice Clay… it’s called entertainment for a reason. Back to my assumption that you must be older… it is logical that you would identify Weasle’s departure as a negative because that is just the thing that Weasle would have brought to the table. Older listeners, with his cranky attitude and older folk’s favorite bit, the “stupid news”. I have news for ya on that… I assume, given the evidence I will supply shortly… Josh was the one who prepared the stupid news and handed it to Weasle on a silver platter (maybe a printed document… but whatever). Exhibit A: That’s why he (Weasle) often paused in the middle of the segment to read ahead. Exhibit B: Why Josh would have more details about the story. Exhibit C: Josh would often play audio relating to the story. As far as Josh, he is the single best radio host I personally have ever listened to… not much more to say about that…

The powertrip lost its captain, rudder and anchor all at once when they let Morris go. The other three spineless meatheads may as well be hosting a morning show for a junior high somewhere. Talentless, juvenile talking heads. Maube 5 minutes out of every hour is worth listening to. The only thing worse on KFAN is that idiot Common who should have been let go 15 yrs ago!
Update: Ali has now been a bigger part, she is doing great. She started come on stronger towards the end of 2000 squirt teen.
Is it just me or does Nick have more made up stories of things he's done/seen,etc. Then the bible? But i do enjoy listening to those three every morning. Anythings better then tom and the kq morning show
Know your roll? Jelly or dinner?
Yea i agree Nick is full of bs. Hes been this arogant as long as ive known him. His name used to be dave. Who changes there name from dave to nick? They need new blood.
If this is their audience no wonder they are having issues. Lol
If only you know how effing moronic you are.
I love the music they play but i cant stand listening to nicks 20 yr old stories. They need someone more in touch with the listeners. Nick needs to move over to KQ he's more there age.
Their*
Ali. Can hands down suck a bowling ball through a coffee stir. As metallica would. Say. Nothing else matters
I agree about Nick and the same old B.S. stories. He should change his name to Forest Gump. Ali has done well and I feel Josh is the main reason I listen. I feel Nick tries so incredibly hard to sound like Tom Barnyard, and it is very annoying. If I wanted to listen to KQ, I would turn it on......
Josh is the only reason I listen to the HAMS. I think he is freaking hilarious.
