A murder story - part twenty-eight

“I’ll get those orders in for y’all.”

“Jesus, Miranda, it wouldn’t kill you to eat something that contained meat.”

“I’m just not that hungry this morning, Danny. Given the circumstances I think you can understand why I’m feeling a bit uneasy.”

“I totally understand,” Danny said with a tone of concern in his voice, “just don’t be afraid to tell me anything and everything that is on your mind. This is a rough case to be working but I’m 100% here for you for whatever you-”

“Danny.” Miranda said flatly. “Do you see that guy sitting against the wall on the other side of the restaurant?”

Danny began to turn.

“Don’t turn,” Miranda said in a hushed voice, “and don’t draw any attention to yourself. That guy came in about five minutes after us and he is staring at me. I’ve seen him staring at me since he walked in here.”

“Yeah, I see him,” Danny stated, “but what do you want me to do? We can’t arrest someone for staring. Maybe he just thinks that you’re attractive -- which you are -- and he’s just rather obvious about checking you out.”

“Or maybe he’s fucking following me.”

“That would be a bit blatant.”

“Dammit Danny, I don’t think that anything is blatant. We’re talking about a killer who left his damn sweatshirt behind after killing my best fucking friend. I don’t know if blatant is in this fucker’s vocabulary.”

“Miranda, I can’t honestly say that someone staring at you in any situation is reason to think that the person staring is a cold-blooded killer.”

“Maybe you’re right, Danny.” Miranda said as she reached for her coffee. “Maybe I need to just take a step back and stop thinking that someone is out to get me.”

“That might be just the thing -- to ground yourself and get back to reality.”

“Here you folks go.” The older waitress said as she placed their plates on the table. “Can I get y’all anything else?”

“No thanks.” Danny said as he picked up his fork with one hand and began drowning his pancakes in syrup with the other. “That should do us but just keep the coffee coming, though. Thanks.”
