If there is one photo which depicts what it is truly like for a child to experience the highest of highs and lowest of lows all in one day, it has to be this photo of a child before and after his first day of kindergarten. Parents everywhere are wrapping up their back to school preparations but nothing can prepare a parent for the look of utter defeat that may cross their doorstep after that fateful first day of kindergarten.

An ode to autumn or go to hell, fall

A cool northeast breeze fluttered across the terra cotta red plastic tray today as I ate my lunch alongside Scott County 42 at the Savage Taco John's restaurant. I saw plenty of people whom I assumed would normally be wearing shorts to be wearing jeans instead. While the calendar says Tuesday, August 26 there was definitely a hint of mid-October in the air.

It dawned on me when I found that first yellow maple leaf lodged in my new aluminum rain gutters while installing getter screens late Sunday afternoon. Fall is drawing near. School supplies have taken over the areas in stores once dominated by patio sets and gas grills and gardens everywhere are running over with the late summer bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. It's even more obvious when I am reminded of the fact that my daughter begins kindergarten in a mere seven days. Fall will soon be completely upon us.

We will spend Saturday afternoons raking and bagging leaves from the trees that shaded us from summer's glaring sun. We will make one last mad dash to harvest every tender vegetable from our garden when the weather forecast predicts autumn's first nip of frost. We'll spend an afternoon picking apples or selecting the perfect pumpkins as we prepare for Halloween. You'll grab a light jacket as you run out the door in the morning. It happens slowly until you realize, one day, that the trees are bare and the lawn has stopped growing. The sun now sets shortly after 8 PM in the evening when six weeks ago there was daylight until well after 9 PM.

Autumn creeps into our consciousness like the ninja of seasons. Not like spring which seems to just happen one day when you look outside and realize that it's 50 degrees and all of the snow and ice is miraculously gone. Autumn is full of brilliant colors, cool breezes and shorter days until you look around one day and all that's left is brown. It catches you off guard. It could be 90 degrees one day and the next could be full of chilly rain showers with the occasional snow flurry. But we expect it because we know that by the end of November we will be donning thick jackets and likely shoveling some snow off of our paths.

Autumn is coming. Until then, though, it can go to hell because we were cursed with yet another lengthy winter, a downright cold and wet spring and a cooler-than-normal summer marked with floods, mosquitoes and more gnats than I care to remember. May our September be hot enough where school children have to wear shorts every day of the week and may October last until Christmas!

Tornado and oil spill in Mayflower, Arkansas

Less than a month after an Exxon oil spill brought crude oil flowing down residential streets and through the yards of homeowners in the small town of Mayflower, Arkansas; tragedy struck again - this time in the form of a tornado.

The tornado (an EF-5), which touched down late yesterday afternoon, stayed on the ground for nearly two hours and carved a path across Arkansas over 60 miles in length. In the process, the tornado caused at least sixteen deaths and seems to have destroyed large portions of the town of Mayflower, Arkansas which lies northwest of Little Rock, Arkansas.

These photos show what remains of large portions of the small town. Take a step back for a moment and imagine what your reaction would be if everything around you was destroyed in seconds, your home reduced to splintered sticks. Now factor in the loss of life. Suddenly your Monday morning looks pretty damn good.

Russian Olympic curling star Anna Sidorova, shown below in racy black lingerie, has been voted Russia's most attractive Winter Olympian, but she wants to be known for her curling, not her curves.

Sidorova is skipper of the Russian women’s curling team, which has rapidly grabbed the attention of the Olympic audience by matching good looks with world-class ability. Sochi problems

The winter Olympics, being held in Sochi, Russia, are full of problems. The photos prove it. Whether it's undrinkable brown water that will apparently melt your face off, weird toilet configurations in the bathrooms or the fact that the city seems to be basically filled with m ore wild dogs than people; the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi seem to be filled with problems and those Sochi problems seem to be what will define these winter Olympic games.

Winter Olympics hotties - Julia Mancuso

Lindsey Vonn might get all the headlines but its Julia Mancuso that takes home all the medals. Mancuso is the most decorated female skier (U.S.) in Olympic history, winning gold in Turin 2006 and two silvers in 2010. She is attempting to become the first woman to win an alpine skiing medal in three separate Olympics. She also has five medals at the World Championships.

Mancuso wears a plastic tiara over her helmet during downhill races. That led to a lingerie line called, “Kiss My Tiara”—a line Mancuso proudly modeled for. “I think underwear is my calling. You can be feminine and fast.” she said.

The 29-year-old Mancuso has struggled ahead of the Sochi games but don’t count her out. She’s widely considered one of the best “big race” skiers of all-time. She may not duplicate her effort in Vancouver but don’t be surprised if she medals again.

Winter Olympic hotties - Hannah Teter

Teter won gold in her signature event, the halfpipe, at the Olympic games in Turin (2006). She followed that up with a silver medal in the same event in Vancouver (2010). She has 6 World Cup victories in her career and is one of the most decorated U.S. snowboarders of all-time.

But what separates Teter, what distinguishes her from others is the humanitarian work. Teter has worked tirelessly for Children International raising money for Darfur, Honduras, Philippines and Kenya. In 2010, she launched Sweet Cheeks, a underwear brand that gives 40% of its proceeds to Children International. She’s a spokeswoman for Boarding for Breast Cancer. She fought against the Canadian seal hunt with an ad for Peta. There’s literally nothing Hannah Teter hasn’t done in the charity world.

Winter Olympic hotties - Anna Fenninger

After making her Olympic debut in Vancouver as a 20-year-old, Austria’s Anna Fenninger has emerged as one of the top overall ski racers in the world. At the 2013 World Championships, she won bronze in the giant slalom. At Worlds two years earlier, she won gold in the super-combined and silver in the team event. A true all-around threat, Fenninger has reached World Cup podiums in downhill, super-G and giant slalom and in 2013 finished third in the World Cup overall standings.

Winter Olympic hotties - Anna Cappalleni

Anna Cappalleni, along with partner Luca Lanotte, the ice dancing duo has won three straight Italian national titles leading into the Sochi Games. They have never won a World Championships medal, though registered their highest finish ever at fourth in 2013. That was coupled with their first-ever European Championships medal the same year, a bronze. Cappellini/Lanotte won two silvers during the Grand Prix season behind Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, though they finished sixth at the Grand Prix Final.

Winter Olympic hotties - Alyson Dudek

Alyson Dudek was part of the United States relay team that won a bronze medal in the 3000m relay in Vancouver. She has been a consistent part of that relay team and has made six World Cup podiums with the group. Dudek won an individual medal at the 2011/2012 World Cup Salt Lake City in the 1000m.  Dudek grew up in Wisconsin and was able to skate at the Pettit Center, which is the home of the national training center.  She originally skated both long track and short track but decided to focus solely on short track.  Dudek has stayed true to her Wisconsin roots by remaining a huge Green Bay Packers fan to this day, and her favorite player is former wide receiver Donald Driver.
