As a child I remember seeing various cooking shows on PBS featuring Julia Child. While she would have been 100 years old yesterday, she never seemed that old to me. I never paid much attention to the female chef but I do remember thinking that she had a strange accent and prepared strange foods. Those were my observations as a five year-old trapped inside on a weekend during our painfully long winters during my childhood.
Maybe I thought that Julia Child prepared strange food because I was five years old. Maybe I thought that the food that Julia Child was preparing was weird or strange because it was actually strange food.
Many years later I have to wonder about the venerable Julia Child. What was she like off-camera? Was she just another person going about her life on Earth? Or was Julia Child viewed as a sex symbol? Sex symbols 30 or 50 years ago were far different than our modern-day sex symbols. A woman with a healthy body and curves was fit to be considered a sex symbol in those days. Now I only remember Julia Child as seeming old -- I know she wasn't always old unless the had some sort of Benjamin Button disease -- but at some point Ms. Child was a young twenty year-old who had likely flawless skin, a young body and a burgeoning talent (cooking) that she would parlay into a multi-decade long career.
In the early part of the 1900s, a woman who could cook and please a man with hearty meals was likely viewed as sexy. She provided what a man wanted after whatever he did during his long day of work. Those scenes were portrayed in cheesy black and white family sitcoms in the 1950s and 1960s but the meals served were definitely up to the standards of Julia Child.
French cuisine was Julia Child's specialty and she honed those skills for well over a decade before landing in her very own TV show featuring the tall chef preparing her favorite French cuisine for viewers.
While I cannot find much in the way of photos prior to Julia Child's rise to popularity in the early 1960s I will have to stand by my question of whether or not Julia Child was a sex symbol.

Patricia Heaton's Sandra Fluke apology means nothing
How little does Patricia Heaton matter in the world of celebrities? It took until noon today, after the aging former co-star of "Everyone Loves Raymond" spouted off over the weekend about college student Sandra Fluke testifying about insurance companies needing to cover birth control for students, for me to even hear about the aging has-been opening her stupid mouth.
I agree with the testimony of Sandra Fluke, insurance companies would be wise to cover birth control options for both women and men (yeah, that means vasectomies, guys). There are plenty of insurance companies who do not provide that coverage -- sometimes costing as little as ten dollars per month -- for women. And the women seeking it out are more often than not in relationships and are obviously capable of making smart decisions. The world doesn't need tens of thousands of unplanned pregnancies which tend to result in births which just so happen to be covered by insurance companies and cost them well over $10,000. Simple math says that any smart insurance company could afford to provide a few hundred months of birth control for women before they equal the cost of covering one birth.
It's easy for someone as disconnected from reality as Patricia Heaton, living on royalties from the 90s sitcom she was a part of, to rattle off a few poor attempts at jokes at the expense of Sandra Fluke who was brave enough and believed in her convictions enough to go out in public and testify before congress about her beliefs -- a belief that insurance companies who just so happen to cover the cost of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, allowing older guys to sport more wood than a lumberyard and harrass their aging wives for some sexing; should actually cover a medicine that improves the lives of women. And yes, I know all about the condom option but I'm sure there are plenty of women who, just like guys, don't want to deal with the perceived hassle and would rather take the responsibility of safe sex in their own hands.
Maybe Patricia Heaton has begun to learn that she isn't going to see eye to eye with others on the topic of birth control. Maybe Patricia Heaton just heard about the idiotic and intentional controversy stirred up by Viagra abuser Rush Limbaugh and decided to pile on. Or maybe Patricia Heaton is just an ignorant D-list Hollywood celebrity nearing the end of her viability who just wants to keep her name in the pages of the media.

3 things to remember when you get older
Every day we probably all think of things that we should remember down the road a stretch. But how many of us actually remember those bits of information for a later date? In lieu of taking actual notes, I though I'd put those wise bits of information right here for all to see.
You can never tell your children something too many times.
SUre, you're going to come off as a broken record when you tell them, for the twentieth time, that it's not safe to hitch a ride with a stranger unless they have a sharp knife or can of mace close at hand but beating some words of wisdom into a child's brain is better than finding out that they've spent four long months in the bottom of Buffalo Bill's well in his creepy sex dungeon. It's just common sense. Oh, and don't take candy from strangers.
Your kid(s) will have premarital sex.
You did it too so don't think you're better than everyone else. If you think that your teenager isn't already fooling around in their car, in the local cemetery, in a deserted barn or underneath the bleachers at their high school's football field you are fooling yourself. Talk to your kid about sex. Yeah, it's gonna be hella awkward and you'll probably find yourself alluding to bumble bees or bananas but it sure beats that excruciating weekend you had back in 11th grade when you waited for your girlfriend's Aunt Flow to come-a-knocking.
It's never too early to think about your own death.
Get a plan together. Your own death is nothing fun to plan for and yes, you have to pay even to die but it's part of the circle of life (or death in this case) so at least have a list of who gets what. I know that everyone in your family will be fighting over the rights to take home that killer collector plate that says you did in fact tackle the biggest burger in the west and won.

Charlie Sheen will be dead within the year?
No matter how hard he apparently tries to wipe himself from the face of the Earth, Charlie Sheen simply won't go the fuck away. Whether it's weekend-long cocaine benders or drinking more booze in a day that most Irish villages consume in a decade, Charlie Sheen just won't get his drunk ass out of the spotlight.
Of course it all sort of came to a head last week when he called out his show's (Two and a Half Men) creator/producer Chuck Lorre as taking advantage of him. Of course that wasn't enough for the likely crazy and/or coked-up Sheen -- he went on to reveal Chuck Lorre's Hebrew name (in a rather ethnic-clurry kind of way) as Chaim Levine. The jury's still out on whether or not that part's even true but he ventured down the Mel Gibson Expressway with a borderline ethnic slur. And so what if Lorre changed his name for showbiz purposes -- Charlie Sheen's real name is actually Carlos Estevez. But crazy druggie Charlie Sheen wasn't done yet, he of course had to drag Warner Brother TV Studio into this. They were responsible for shutting down production of Two and a Half Men last week but Sheen accused them of profiting wildly from the immensely successful show which Sheen stars in.
Outside of the obvious reasoning that businesses exist to profit wildly from their employees, this isn't really news. Sheen receives in excess of $1.25 million per episode of Two and a Half Men so unless he spending that much on cocaine 24 times each year (that would be ALOT of blow) he is rather handsomely rewarded for his twenty-two minutes of acting each week for approximately half of the year.
But why is this news? Why does it effect me?
It's the ever-present, mind-numbing analysis of nearly every step of those who entertain the masses. It's supposedly news because we like a good trainwreck. It's a twisted way to think of things but plenty of people love to see someone famous self-destruct. Sure, the Dr. Phils of the world are standing by, eager to help the oh-so-troubled stars and starlets because they are so fucking important to the world as a whole. Here's a newsflash -- THEY AREN'T IMPORTANT AT ALL. How many big name stars made a huge impact on our TV-centered culture in the past five decades and just as quickly as they became popular, they faded into obscurity?
Even more important is why do I care? I care because, like so many others, I like to see the undeservingly privileged destroy themselves. Sheen, who seems to live out a sort of autobiography as a sex and booze addicted slacker in coastal southern California on Two and a Half Men, has this coming to him. I'd like nothing more that for his show to fall off the radar. He frolicks around with prostitutes and porn stars yet claims to love his family. He has beaten his wife and girlfriends in the past yet claims to be a family man who loves and provides for them. He is the worst type of hypocrite and while the supporting cast and crew of his CBS sitcom don't deserve the unemployment line, this needs to be the end of Charlie Sheen because the mere mention of his name both infurates and intensely interests me. I hate him because he's not acting, he's just being himself but I love seeing his death spiral.

Mark Sanchez sexes up 17 year-old?
I fail to understand how it's news that a young NFL quarterback (Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets) who is a good looking kind of guy ended up bedding an attractive, albeit illegal young lady on or around New Year's Eve.
That, though, is exactly the kind of scandal that keeps a site like Deadspin in the news. They, somehow, break what turns out to be rather scandalous sports scandals and the very fact that the nearly 25 year-old Mark Sanchez ended up taking a 17 year-old Eliza Kruger (notice her breaking a law herself by smoking a cigarette in this photo from her Facebook page) back to his home on a golf course in Jersey and throwing for a between-the-sheets touchdown with his jailbait piece of ass for the evening.
But back to why this is news. Athletes are notorious, no matter how clean-cut they appear, for being shady. The athletic landscape is full of scandals -- plenty of which have surfaced recently. Tiger Woods liked himself some porn stars, hookers and generally just liked having sex -- with anyone but his wife. Michael Jordan is alleged to have gambled on NBA games which is supposedly why he retired for just over one NBA season to try his hand at playing baseball. Half of the players in Major League Baseball have allegedly used some sort of steroids. Ben Roethlisberger was suspended for a portion of the NFL season for sexual assualt and we all know that it was actually rape. And who could forget our very own (for two years) Brett Favre who apparently likes texting photos of his good ole' Mississippi dong to former New York Jets massage therapists. So is anyone shocked that a guy who is famous, flush with cash and living a bachelor's life in the greater New York City area would have women, or in this case 17 year-old socialites, throwing themselves at him?
I know I'm not and I doubt that this story breaking nationally will do anything to truly change Sanchez's behavior nor will it do anything to the parents of Eliza Kruger who let their 17 year-old daughter smoke cigarettes and hang out in a club where she'd then be able to nail a professional athlete.
I don't know whose side to take in this story and I'm not sure that either party is anywhere close to innocent. In fact I'm pretty sure both of them is guilty but this will do nothing to tarnish Mark Sanchez's image and I'm sure it will do nothing to change the behavior of Eliza Kruger because something tells me that this isn't the first time either has done something or considered doing something along these lines.

Which whipped cream is best for Valentine's Day fun?
Last night as I laid down in bed, I though of whipped cream. That, of course, led me to laugh a bit and that single thought about whipped cream led me to write this.
It all began a couple weeks ago when I bought a quart of Kemps whipping cream. A dessert I was making called for it and I fully intended to make this particular dessert by the books. Well, after making that dessert and another dessert this week I was left with more than half of the original quart of Kemps whipping cream. The question in my head was this: do I continue making desserts which call for whipped cream or do I find another, more fun way to use this whipped cream.
It's widely know that some women like to show off a whipped cream bikini for their significant other but that usually involves an aerosol can of Redi-Wip of some equivalent of that particular brand. It could be for ease of use or it could be for texture but the aerosol whipped cream is the go-to choice for not just whipped cream bikinis but for other various forms of sex play which is best carried out on a washable tarp or rubber bed sheets.
I'm thrifty though so I wondered if anyone has ever whipped up a bowl full of whipped cream made from a quart container of Kemps whipping cream. What's the process there? Does the gentleman spoon generous heaps of whipped cream on to his significant other's lady bits? I have to think that the woman in this scenario would likely be turned off not only by her man's thriftiness but by the awkward vision of the whole thing.
There's absolutely nothing erotic about someone holding a wooden spoon full of whipped cream, piling mountains of it on to another's body. Sure, home-whipped whipped cream is straight-up delicious but it doesn't have the cling factor of its aerosol sibling. There are multiple items involved with distributing the non-aerosol whipped cream. First off you'd likely have a metal mixing bowl of whipped cream on the nightstand. Then there's the whole matter of the giant wooden spoon to transfer the whipped cream from the bowl to the quivering, anxious lady bits. It's gonna get messy and that whipped cream is probably just going to slide off her lady bits as it comes in contact with her 98.6 degree skin. You'd either have to use the spoon or your hands to distribute the whipped cream in to anything resembling a bikini form. Again, not erotic at all. Plus in this scenario, the creation of the whipped cream bikini from something akin to Kemps whipping cream becomes a two-person operation.
While the whipped cream made from Kemps whipping cream may be better used for straight-up foreplay in a more horizontal setting, it's still going to be awkward and you, as the man in the relationship, are going to come across as cheap and probably both awkward and stupid. For this Valentine's Day, I recommend sticking with the tried and true Redi-Wip and, for once, spend a bit more for a superior and more versatile product.

What's with Slate's recent obsession with anal sex?
To most people, breaking down sexual acts via a pile of data and charts can truly make a person totally bored with the topic but for whatever reason now, twice in the course of a week, Slate has had articles on anal sex. For a rather intellectual-leaning website, I find that the recurring topic of anal sex is interesting.
Rather than rehash the data breakdown initially reported and the follow-up story analyzing the reasons behind the data, I though I'd ask questions and ponder answers about who is partaking in anal sex.
Historically speaking, anal sex has been rather taboo. It's not considered to be the social norm. Maybe it's because we're a nation of total prudes or maybe it's because those participating in anal sex have kept their sexual acts behind closed doors. Let's face it, even in 2010 people aren't exactly open about their sexual habits. It's not water cooler conversation but sex in all forms is definitely becoming more mainstream. Thank the internet for that and the rabid spread of adult-themed videos which many think is the only reason the internet exists.
Maybe the pervasive spread of technology is the simplest explanation for the uptick in anal sex. Sex isn't a technological activity but the amount of people who view porn and talk openly about it is somewhat interesting. A friend of mine spent the better part of an hour last summer around a camp fire drunkenly giggling as he showed off that his new Droid phone could play video with astounding quality. The more interesting thing about that evening was that nobody was shocked, appalled or disgusted because my generation has grown up since our teens surrounded by the internet and we know full well that while it's a powerful tool for business and communication it's also a portal for pornography. That very pornography is very freeing and liberating for some and I have a feeling that's part of the reason for the increase in the number of people reporting participating in and enjoying anal sex.
But who are these people? Judging by the number of comments on Slate's first story and the profile of the typical Slate reader, educated folks are not only experimenting with but also enjoying anal sex and apparently doing so is a regular occurance. Are they doing so because it's the next logical step when it comes to sexual experimentation or are they engaging in anal sex because of that wealth of pornography that the internet brings in to our homes? But when anal sex reaches that majority threshhold, what comes next? When it's no longer shocking or even interesting to bring up to friends that you and your significant other have been going in through the out door, what comes next? As trends go, the adult film industry is a bit of a trend-setter so I guess we'll have to wait until then to find out.

Lady Gaga - Alejandro video
Outside of some simulated sexual intercourse and some S&M going on, Lady Gaga's video for her latest single, "Alejandro", is far from shocking. She's made the epic music video her trademark in the last year so an eight-plus minute clip for a four-minute song isn't much of a surprise. Lady Gaga is going to have to step it up a few notches. Oh, sure, she struts around fora bit with machine guns attached to her bra and spends the majority of the video just one step above naked but that's who she is. In being shocking, Lady Gaga has taken the shock out of her shocking and isually stunning imagery. To me, the video for "Alejandro" tries too damn hard to be edgy, shocking and cool and instead falls sort of flat.

My hairstylist could do without prom
As I was getting my hair did yesterday, the conversation turned to prom season. It's just around the corner and it signals Spring and the approach of Summer. It also means one terror-filled day for hairdressers everywhere.
Her main gripe was with the snippy little bitches who tear a page out of a magazine of a dolled up teen starlet and demand that very same hairstyle. All for 50 bucks. I can relate because I have clients demand a certain look and based on what I'm being paid, they get what I give them. It's a lot like a counterfeit Rolex. It's close but anyone who sees it knows that it's just not the same.
From hairstyles and the bitchy girls who demand that this curl go the opposite direction, we moved towards the excesses of the modern prom. From stretch limos to dresses that A.) cost what my wife's wedding dress did to B.) the skanky, too-short dresses girls wear to formal dances.
Now before you call me a codger or an angry old coot, I'm only 30 years old but just twelve or fourteen years ago when I went to my junior and senior prom, the girls weren't wearing ultra-short, hey, look at my panties-type dresses (and that's if the girls today are even bothering to wear underthings...) or at least my dates weren't.
So what has changed? Has fifteen or so years seen changes so drastic that I should just give up and admit that I am hopelessly disconnected from all things younger? And since when does prom have to be the teenage equivalent of a wedding? I know one thing, my daughter's going to pay her own way if she sees the need for a stretch limo, hundred dollar hairdo and a barely-there dress because the one difference between a wedding and prom is that very few couples have sex in the back seat of their parents' car on their wedding night. The same can not be said for prom night.
Check out MinnPics if you give a damn about the rising river levels across all part sof Minnesota. New photos just posted...

The incredible shrinking Danish nuts
The testicle size, along with other trends such as decreased sperm count, has been on the decline for males born in Denmark - especially when compared with residents of nearby Finland. While this is troubling from a sexual and health standpoint, it's even more an issue of pride.
For women reading this, don't jump to the conclusion that every guy you pass on the street has unbuttoned his pants in the office restroom and, for lack of a better phrase, compared notes with his male co-workers. Sure, at least some guys have pulled out their package and unabashedly compared cock size with their counterparts but those who do aren't focusing on the health side of the comparison and what is happening to those poor Danish folks - the decreasing size of the nuts, balls, dangly bits or testicles.
Chalk it up to exposure to a witch's brew of chemicals in the environment during the first trimester while in the womb. Scientists have seen it by way of feminization of fish from many of the same chemicals so it makes sense that, to a certain extent, it's happening to humans as well. Now having smaller testicles (nuts from here on out) does not make for a lesser man - though I did hear an argument from a male friend standing naked from the waist down at the kitchen table during a New Year's Eve party nearly a decade back that his huge nuts made up for what he was obviously lacking in the penis department - but smallish nuts do not make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Unless the smaller size relates to a decrease in testosterone production.
That, unfortunately, is one of the problems being reported with all of that scientific research surrounding the nuts of the Danes. Could our overuse of chemicals lead to a world of borderline sterile males? Hey, anything's possible and this is an especially important topic to me because I'm only the second generation of my family born here in the good ole U.S. of A. Yep, my grandpa immigrated here from, you guessed it, Denmark. Now I'm sure that times have changed because he fathered 11 children and, based on the translated letter between a relative here in Minnesota to a brother of his in Denmark written in 1945 which I received via e-mail yesterday, that number (with only 5 or 6 kids born at that time) even in 1945 was incredible.
By virtue of my own lineage I shouldn't have much to worry about but with evolution what it is we could face a world (someday) filled with women. So maybe the future will be one where lesbian relationships are more the norm than the exception. After all, too much of a swing away from a near balance of genders would lead to either many more same-sex relationships (in this case lesbian) or polygamy becoming not only accepted but necessary for our species to continue our dominance on Earth.
Now that I've spouted off about my lack of scientific knowledge, go check out something I may actually know about - photography. The photos from all over Minnesota at MinnPics want you to look at them, they cry if you don't give them attention!

Lindsey Vonn's ass looks yummy
It's not ever day that a local girl makes the cover of Sports Illustrated but U.S. Olympic ski-team member Lindsey Vonn from right here in the Twin Cities has done just that. And she's garnered plenty of attention -- and controversy -- for looking damn fine in the process.
Now to a casual magazine reader, you'd think that it's just another magazine with an athlete featured on the cover. But with a rather rabid blogosphere eager to analyze every photo of anyone even mildly famous, it was only a matter of time before everyone with far too much time on their hands picked apart the soon-to-be-infamous Lindsey Vonn Sports Illustrated cover photo.
Now being that I'm a red-blooded American guy, I think she looks hot as hell. Being that she is basically a professional athlete, she has an incredibly toned body. She could probably kick my ass and, you know what, I'd let her. For one, it's not cool to beat up on a woman but secondly, she's a knockout and that pose was done intentionally.
Yeah, I know it's a typical skiing pose for downhill skiing but she isn't moving. There's no illusion of motion in that photo. She's just made to look like she's screaming down a snow-covered slope somewhere. And then there's the positioning of her rather taught rear end over the magazine's masthead. That's just another intentional move for a magazine geared at guys.
I could go on and on about the obvious layering of photos - one for the mountainous background, likely one for the setting sun and cloudy sky and a heavily airbrushed Lindsey Vonn. Nobody gets that dolled up to take a run down a ski slope and while I know that this was a photo shoot, the level of digital altering is bordering on ridiculous.
But in the end it's sex that sells. It sells everything and while I wouldn't buy Sports Illustrated just because Lindsey Vonn and her awesome ass graces the cover, millions of other guys would and while I criticize moves like this solely to sell a magazine, my job is much the same so I'll shut up now and do the right thing - drool over the curves and protruding, smackable ass of Lindsey Vonn.

Who is your teen grinding on at school dances???
We've all been to high school dances. For me it was prom in both my junior and senior years. That was the extent of it. The lights were low, the theme sucked and so did the setting - my high school's 80-plus year-old basketball gym. One year I stuck around with my date through the dance and even the post-prom lock-in and we actually had fun. The other year found my date and I having differences and we went our separate ways which lead to us not speaking for nearly a year but we smoothed things over and are damn good friends now. But maybe things could have been different with that last part of the story. Maybe things could have been different if the music was heavier. Maybe if the music had more of a dance beat with some more rhythmic undertones to it there would have been some grinding going on. But let's get real, that was 1996 and I don't remember any suggestive or sexual dancing going on.
Oh, how things have changed in a little more than a decade as witnessed by this video done before Minnetonka High School's 1996 Homecoming dance.
But the dance moves described there make current teen dance trends seem like something from the 1950s. Especially based on this story from the Milwaukee area.
What actually piques my interest are the rules...
• When dancing back to front, all dancers must remain upright -- no sexual bending is allowed. Examples are, no hands on knees, and no hands on the dance floor with your buttocks touching your dance partner.
• There will be no touching of the breasts, buttocks, or genitals.
• There will be no straddling of each others' legs.
• Boys must wear collared shirts and dress pants.
• Girls cannot have dresses that expose cleavage, extend above the mid-thigh, (or) have slits extending above mid-thigh.
I particularly like the phrase "sexual bending". I can guess what it as after being at a few gentlemen's clubs but how is that incorporated in to any sort of dancing that you'd want to do at a high school dance. That's the kind of shit that goes on at a rockin' house party where everyone is drinking and making worse decisions than they usually do.
But what's my stance on "sexual bending" in dancing? Go for it. High school should be fun and "sexual bending" sure beats flat out sex. Remember when you were 16 years old? You were probably a huge ball of hormones pretty much ready to jump on anyone that moves so if "sexual bending" during a dance takes the edge off those hormones then that's a good thing. It's definitely better than a bunch of horned up teenagers who are too embarrassed to buy a box of condoms finding a dark road to occupy their time because they can't dance the way they want to at their own high school.
Sure, my opinion is likely to change in about 15 years when my girl reaches that age but wait until then to call me a hypocrite.
Until then, bide your time by checking out the photos of Minnesota on a daily basis at MinnPics.

Scott County to give property owners a "shocker"
Normally I wouldn't participate in pointing out unfortunate phrases which, when read by me, have an entirely different meaning but a story about property taxes in the rather cash-rich Twin Cities county escalating for "fake" farm owners caught my eye.
So, you can see my confusion. Are some land owners going to be penetrated or receive a tax hike. Yeah, I know that the answer is clearly spelled out in the story but it's more fun to let the imagination run wild.
In one extreme case -- a "shocker," in the words of County Auditor Cindy Geis --See, right there, the County Auditor plans on delivering a shocker. If you're unfamiliar with the definition, here it is.
annual property taxes will skyrocket from about $5,000 to nearly $40,000.
The act of inserting 2 fingers into the vaginal opening (normally the index and
middle fingers), and 1 into the anus (normally the "pinky" finger). This is
usually performed when she is laying back, in the "deep thrust" postion (see
"deep thrust" for more hardcore info). Commonly described a numerous number of
ways, e. g. 2 in the pink, 1 in the stink; two in the grass one in the ass; two
in the slut one in the butt; two in the koot, one in the boot; goin to town with
one in the brown; and many more, this method of sexual gratification is one
sought out by people of all levels.
So, you can see my confusion. Are some land owners going to be penetrated or receive a tax hike. Yeah, I know that the answer is clearly spelled out in the story but it's more fun to let the imagination run wild.

Belts of America
For many decades, portions of America have been identified by various "belts". These are large geographic areas of the country which share similar characteristics relating to geography, climate, inhabitants and a whole host of other items.
The accompanying graphic is by no means a comprehensive rundown of but I've done my research. Feel free to add other "belt" suggestions in the comments.
Then head to MinnPics later to see the freshest in Minnesota photography.

My hometown is going to hell
I grew up in Austin, MN. Yeah, it sounds like that first statement from an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting but with the headlines on my hometown newspaper's website it is a bit shameful to say that I'm a former Austinite.
Chief stands by department's actions
Mace was used, three were arrested at an illegal immigration rally Saturday in Austin
The Austin police chief said Monday that his officers acted appropriately Saturday when using a chemical spray and making three arrests at a downtown protest.
Austin resident and member of the National Socialist Movement Samuel Johnson organized the illegal immigration protest at the Veterans Memorial in front of the courthouse, but things escalated when a large group of counter protesters — including many from an anti-racism coalition arrived.
Woman charged for allegedly slashing boyfriend
An Austin woman has been charged with felony assault for allegedly slashing her boyfriend with a knife, punching him and biting him Saturday.
Juana Viviana Lopez, 21, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday. Along with the second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon charge, she faces a felony count of terroristic threats, as well as one lesser charge.
Austin resident pleads guilty to prostitution count
An Austin man charged with hiring a 17-year-old prostitute who later stole his shorts from a motel room pleaded guilty Monday in Mower County.
Carlos Lennin Batista-Quintana, 24, will be sentenced March 18 on one gross misdemeanor count of prostitution for hiring a 16- or 17-year-old.
**************
Okay, that last story about the prostitute is sort of funny. No, not because it's about paying for sex with a school-age teen but because the prostitute, who was doing her business at a motel known for prostitution, stole the guy's shorts. If you can't trust a hooker, who can you trust?
I promise to keep it classy at MinnPics. It's a photographic journey through Minnesota that you should really check out. And yes, I do portray Austin in a positive light there.

Were your neighbors just having sex?
Let's face it, without sex we wouldn't be walking the Earth, going about our live or reading such fantastic blogs as this. So in this ultra-connected, ultra-shared web-centric world we live in it was only a matter of time until someone started a website that let users share their erotic encounters on a worldwide map. That's probably why I Just Made Love (h/t) was born.
It's handy to me so I can tell if the next door neighbors were screaming due to an argument or flat-out, wall-rattling, glass shattering, crazy sex. It's the newest way to be an anonymous voyeur and while it's not for everyone, I think it's worth a few moments of your time to clock and scroll around and read the quick notes about user's sexual encounters.
And on another, semi-related note, today is Columbus Day so banks are closed. Seriously, quit Googling for an answer. Banks are closed - it's a government holiday but some would argue that with the way our government works that every day must be a government holiday.
Now go do something woth your life that you'll be proud of - check out MinnPics. It's freshly updated a complete with photographic evidence of our ultra-early Twin Cities snowfall.

Cougars in the suburbs?
By now we all know that the suburban cougar is alive and well. The suburban cougar is pursued by young males everywhere. If I weren't married, I'd probably be pursuing a cougar for myself because she'd probably have a few tricks up her sleeve. But today I'm not talking about that suburban cougar that hangs out at bars and wears seductive clothing. Today I'm talking about real cougars in the giant feline form.
A local thoroughbred who was supposed to be a spokeshorse of sorts for other retired ponies was attacked by what many think to be a cougar on a farm in Prior Lake near a Shakopee elementary school. I've always had my doubts about the tales I've heard since moving here about cougars and coyotes roaming the valleys along the Minnesota River. My wife is particularly adamant about the existence of coyotes. She recounts memories of hearing them on the farm she grew up on just above the Minnesota River. Her brothers had seen coyotes in the woods near the farm and her dad had shot at them to scare them away on numerous occasions.
Again, I had my doubts. I never believe something until I've seen it with my own eyes. Then one night while driving in the Belle Plaine area along Highway 169 I actually saw a small dog-like animal standing on the shoulder of the road. I knew it wasn't a fox - I have seen plenty of those while growing up in far southern Minnesota. My wife immediately told me that it was a coyote.
And that is exactly what the Minnesota DNR thinks attacked My Friend Deke, the horse that was stabling in Prior Lake. If I lived in that immediate area or had kids who attended that particular elementary school, I'd be alreat but not concerned. After all, we are the ones who encroached on the area which these wild animals call home. Six years ago when I moved here, that particular area was still corn fields and woods. Now it is leveled and full of half-million dollar homes and strip malls. When humans and animals try to co-exist, it's usually the animals who end up losing the battle in the end but a cougar or a coyote attacking a farm animal should serve as a wake-up call that we are all pissing nature off.
If you like nature and want to embrace it, check out MinnPics which often times showcases fabulous photos of Minnesota's natural beauty.

One celeb to stab me, one to cuddle
The quote of the day:

Getting sexily stabbed by Megan Fox every now and then in exchange for seeing her naked all the time seems like a good deal. She could dip the knife in cobra venom, lemon juice and syphilis, then jam it in my leg and wiggle it back and forth and I’d still probably cum in my pants.from h/t
I can honestly say that I've never once suggested to someone that they could stab me but there are those rare occasions when one's sexiness trump their bitchiness and craziness and Megan Fox, who stars in the Diablo Cody-written Jennifer's Body which opens tomorrow, is that rare exception.
Wow, the things I'd let her do. She's crazy sexy which is different from my classification of Zooey Deschanel who is cute and quirky sexy.
And now that pics of Zooey and Megan have you in a looking mood, check out the photos at MinnPics. Always nice eyecandy.

Online dating: last resort or new norm?
Let me preface this by saying that I've never used online dating nor am I currently considering using online dating - mainly because I'm married and I'm assuming that my old lady wouldn't exactly be cool with me re-entering the dating field. My sister-in-law, though, has taken the plunge in to the online dating universe.
She is a few years older than I am and she's never really had a problem finding guys to date. She has, however, had a problem getting them to stick around. She wants something long-term and they want to hit it and quit it. I've seen the TV ads for Match.com and the people they feature, actors or not, seem to have landed happy relationships that culminated in marriage. So is online dating considered to be the new norm or is it a last resort for the truly desperate?
People's lives are busier than ever and they spend their free time in ways far different than in the past. No longer do people head to an ice cream social to meet their neighbors. I don't exactly see sock hops where people in the early twenties meet and go to the local diner to share a malt.
Nope. Today, people who make up the dating population are a house parties, bars, clubs or wirking a second or third job. Their lives are total chaos and not too many people I know were ready to get hitched at 19 years old to their high school sweetheart or the girl next door. They were in college or busy getting stoned in the basement or garage. The last thing on their minds was finding "the one".
I have to ask if anyone you know who uses online dating is open about their experiences. Have they come right out and said that they met the person they are with via an online dating service? Or is there a stigma that equates "resorting" to online dating to being a recluse or loser who couldn't find a date if they lived forever? If you're single, would you go the online dating route or are you more inclined to roll the dice and see who you bump in to in the produce aisle?
MinnPics isn't going to help you find a date but the cool photos could find you some popular locations where singles may linger.

Vampires alive and well in my house
It involved a garbage bag, a dust pan, two fly swatters, a pair of pliers, an ice scraper and a can of hornet spray. No, it wasn't some sort of new auto-erotic asphyxiation sex game where the last one standing wins. This all took place in the home office/studio last night. Again, it wasn't a kinky sex game.
As I downloaded photos in silence I heard scratching against metal. I immediately knew it was coming from somewhere near the vent adjacent to the desk. Normally I wouldn't have heard anything because I'd have iTunes open but the old Mac was running slow as it choked on the addition of 600+ wedding photos from Saturday. The scratching on metal after 10 PM weirded me out. I assumed it was a mouse and prepared to grab the fat cat remove the vent, close the door and let the cat have a free meaty meal. But I decided to get a second opinion for the scratching diagnosis.
My old lady came in and instructed me to shine one of the funky lights towards the vent and her prognosis was - wait for it - a bat. I pondered just what the hell to do and came to the conclusion that if I could get the vent apart we could cover it with a garbage bag and easily trap the miniature vampire and go to be in five minutes. But 10 minutes later I had gathered a dust pan (the weapon that brought down the last bat about three years ago), two fly swatters, pliers to remove the vent and a garbage bag.
Fast forward another five minutes and after poking and prodding at the bat who clung to the side of the duct we had made absolutely no progress. My next brilliant idea was to gas it out. I automatically thought of the flying insect spray I had bought in bulk (why buy one can when they come three to a package?!?) and returned with a full can of hornet spray. But before I resorted to that, I turned the A/C on hoping to freeze mini-dracula out. Fail again. Now with the corner of the garbage bag slightly opened and the stink of my own failure rapidly filling the room, I shot a few long jets of hornet killer into the open vent. Then we waited. Hoping to hear a small thump on the metal below, we instead heard little claws on metal.
The little bastard bat had retreated back where it came from. The good news is that we didn't again break the dust pan as we did during the last bat battle. The bad news is that there is still a bat living in our home's ventilation system. Somewhere in the snaking maze of ductwork, a bat, for now, lives and we wait in fear of a bat swooping through the house, biting us and turning us in to vampires.
In other news, Minnesota had an awesome weekend and the photos tell the stories. Check out MinnPics now and frequently all day long.
